9.13.19 - 9.15.19: BAGBY’S 5th Anniversary Weekend

We’re so excited to be celebrating out 5th Anniversary - How can it be FIVE years since we opened our doors?

It seemed to take a lifetime to open at all, and once we did, boy oh boy has it been a whirlwind every day since. We couldn’t be more proud of the place we created, the folks we call family, the countless friends we have made along the way – like you!

Every year about this time, fortunate as all get out to be able to celebrate another milestone, we reflect on all we have accomplished so far, and all that is still yet to come. And we are immediately struck with the importance each and every fan, friend, and guest is to our continued success. And that, fine folks, is cause for celebration.

So we hope you can join us this weekend as we pass that 5-year mark – some exciting things coming your way:

First, we’ve got some Bagby Beer in CANS for you! This is a brand new endeavor, one we have toyed with in our minds for a long time. We decided it would be pretty neat to package a couple of beers to mark this momentous occasion. These beers are extremely limited and will both be for sale starting 11AM on Friday, as long as they last.

Sweet Ride – Pilsner: this awesome little beer scored a GOLD medal at the Great American Beer Fest (GABF) a couple of years back, and has been our house fave lager ever since. Soft on the palate, with unmistakable lager character, supremely drinkable. This batch has been resting (lagering!) in the tank for months, waiting for just this chance to go home with you, and grace your refrigerator (and then your taste buds). 4x16oz $14.

We thought we'd be remiss if we didn't brew an anniversary beer, as well, and why not put that baby in a can, too? Introducing…

What A Time To Be Alive – American IPA: IPAs are a big part of our history here at Bagby, and this one is as classic, as West Coast-style, as you can get. Light golden in color, packed with American hops, this beer’s citrus, floral bitterness lingers just long enough on the palate, and finishes super dry. It’s delicious, and we hope you grab some before it’s gone. 4x16oz $16.

Both beers will also be on draught for your on-site enjoyment!

Weekend Schedule:

  • Friday 5PM - Close: Throwback Pricing on Original Menu Items

  • Saturday 12PM - 6PM: Grill Party with Specialty Hot Dogs & Liters (Vegan Hot Dogs, too!)

  • Sunday 10AM - 1PM: Build Your Own Breakfast Burritos *Supreme* Edition featuring a few new Burrito options: Surf & Turf with Grilled Shrimp and Carne Asada, Classic Chroizo, and an all new Vegan Burrito

  • Sunday 4PM: Cake Cutting & Toast with the Bagbys on the Upstairs Deck

All weekend we’ll be offering select Bagby beers for just $5, plus be on the lookout for anniversary tees and glassware for sale, discounted merch, and more!

So, here's to celebrating the last 5 years, and to looking forward the next 5. We're grateful and humbled to be here, and in one way or another, you've been a piece of that. Thank you!

We hope you can come through this weekend and say hi, we'd love to see you!

09.28.19: Zwanze Day - SOLD out, thank you!

We’re celebrating our 6th Zwanze Day here at Bagby, are so proud and humbled to be selected.

One of the oldest and most authentic makers of Lambic and Gueuze in the world, Brasserie Cantillon, in Brussels, Belgium will once again release a very special beer for this year’s Zwanze Day. The Bagbys have a wonderful relationship with Jean Van Roy, his family, and the people of Cantillon. We are extremely proud to pour our friend’s beer for our guests here at Bagby Beer, and grateful for the companionship, hospitality, and kindness Jean has always showed us when we are lucky enough to visit Cantillon in Brussels.

Due to the extremely limited amount of Cantillon beer available, this will be a ticketed event, and only Zwanze Day ticket holders will be permitted in this area during the event. Tickets will remain on sale online while they last, or until midnight on 9/27/19.We'll hold the Zwanze Day toast promptly at 12pm PST so we can be in sync with the world-wide toast. As is tradition, the toast will be to celebrate Cantillon, craft beer, and friendship alongside the other locations enjoying Zwanze on September 29th! We hope you'll join us for some rare and delicious beer.

This year’s Zwanze:

“The beer for this year's Zwanze was brewed in March 2016 and kegged January 26th 2018. Contrary to past Zwanze beers, this beer is not the result of a special blend or the addition of a special fruit, but of a wholly unique brew. On March 1st 2016, we brewed a smoked Lambic using a blend of classic pilsner malt and smoked malt. Rather than taking the beer to an extreme, we looked instead to find a balance between the acidic character of Lambic and the woodiness of the smoked malt.

The result is a fine Gueuze with the classic notes of a Cantillon, complemented by an elegant smokiness in the nose and on the palate.” - JVR

In addition to the Zwanze beer, We will also be pouring

  • Gueuze

  • Nath

  • Magic Lambic

  • Either Kriek or Rosé de Gambrinus

  • Either St-Lamvinus, St-Lamvinus Grand Cru, or Vigneronne

Important Details - please read carefully!

  • This event is rain or shine; absolutely all sales are final. Please do not ask for a refund if your plans change.

  • Sorry, due to limited space, kids and dogs are absolutely not permitted in the Zwanze event area. We also cannot allow those without tickets. Unfortunately there will be no exceptions, so we beg of you: please, please, please be prepared and do not put us in a position to tell you no. Please!

06.26.19 - Solstice: A Paired Dining Experience —— SOLD OUT - Thank you!

Join Bagby Beer Company's Sommelier/Cicerone Justin Evelyn and Executive Chef Robert Gaffney for another evening of delicious food expertly paired with world-class beers, hand-selected wines, and curated spirits.  Our first for this year, Solstice is inspired by the intensity of the onset of the summer season. Just past the warm-up of Spring, Summer is the star of the seasons, and this pairing experience will be heavily influenced by the gifts of the sun - the word 'Solstice' is a combination of Latin words for sun (sol) and stationary (stit) - the sun is at its highest point in in the sky upon the summer solstice, and appears to be remaining still - we hope to capture this magical time of the year with you!

This dinner is not only for those who have already embraced eating plant-based, but those who are interested in learning that a fulfilling, satisfying, inspiring meal can be entirely plant-based. It is our goal to demonstrate our reverence for the simplest of ingredients by preparing and presenting them beautifully. Locally sourced products will be showcased.

Our last pairing dinner sold out early - our fastest sell out yet - so please, don't hesitate. Seating is extremely limited for this special evening.

•  We will meet in our upstairs dining room at 6PM on Wednesday, June 26th. Plan for a three hour dining experience

•  Tickets are $85pp and will include 8 courses, each paired with either a Bagby beer, a wine, spirit, or cocktail; guests will each also enjoy a Reception beer upon arrival

•  Gratuity is included in the ticket price

•  Ticket holders should be 21+ over with valid ID.

Please email dande@bagbybeer.com with any questions!

3.23.19: ORVAL DAY

There are so many reasons to celebrate this foundational Trappist beer from a breathtakingly beautiful, hallowed abbey in southern Belgium - it has been occupied as an abbey for over 900 years there. Orval is the one and only beer they brew for sale, and they have been doing so for decades! That it is also one of the most delicious beers in the world only makes it that much more outstanding. It has been brewed at the abbey for 85 years and was the first Trappist beer to be widely distributed throughout Belgium. It features a distinct dry-hopped finish, with plenty of Brettanomyces influence that countless brewers today are forever working to emulate.

Come join us to celebrate this beer, and to honor the philanthropic Trappist traditions and one of our favorite places in the world.

All day March 23rd, order a bottle of Orval served in its specially designed, timeless glass for just $10 - and you get to keep the glass! A perfect day to try this beer for the first time, or to remind yourself how awesome it is. We've had a blast the last three years introducing many open-minded beer lovers to Orval, and toasting to friendship with so many of you.

Let’s make this a special Bagby/Orval tradition - we’ll see you on Saturday!

The beer festival for do-gooders returns February 9th, 2019 for its 10th year! Hosted here at Bagby since 2014 (we were still under construction!) we are thrilled to be the home for this event, that we hope will raise over $50,000 for the Keep A Breast Foundation to help support their education programs, which aim to empower young people to know their bodies and reduce their cancer risk. Like every year, dozens of awesome breweries (many of whom have participated since the festival began), a world-class raffle, and new this year: live music! It’s going to be a blast, the most fun you’ve had doing something good for others.

This event will sell out, so get your tickets today!

01.19.19: BAGBYFEST 3

Join us for our next Bagbyfest on Saturday January 19th, 2019!

Bagbyfest is a celebration of everything we think is excellent - from incredible beer, wine, spirits, cocktails and food - for those that have been a part of Bagbyfest, they already know: it is the most unique and fun beverage and food festival anywhere.

Bagbyfest will take place right here at the Bagby Beer Company compound in Oceanside - virtually the entire space will be dedicated to the event, where we hope to recreate the European community tradition that is the Marché d'Hiver (or Marché de Noël). The Winter Market is an annual pastime in nearly every city, town and village throughout much of Europe and each is the perfect mix of regionally-influenced cuisine - c’est bon! These markets are a genuine celebration of history and tradition, and are a communal space to connect to both.

For Bagbyfest 3, we’re going to create our own version – a balance of these long-standing enriching European traditions, with a little of our own saveur de Bagby. Right here in Oceanside. Bienvenue au troisième Bagbyfest.

Aside from all of these delicious experiences you’ll enjoy, we've also put together an excellent Invitational Beer Festival with a fantastic list of brewers and breweries that inspire us. They'll bring some of their favorite beers to share with you.

Part beer festival, part food, wine, cocktails and spirits festival, part European winter market - BagbyFest 3 is going to be an epic few hours, and we hope you can join us. Tickets are limited and we expect BagbyFest will sell out

Event is from 5PM to 9PM on Saturday January 19th

Each ticket will award you: admission into the entire event area, a custom Bagbyfest 3 glass to keep, a branded, awesome beanie or scarf to keep warm, an event badge to track your food and beverage experiences from the offerings on hand, and tastes from the beer festival

Early check in will begin at 4:30PM on 1/19/19

Bagbyfest is rain or shine; no refunds will be provided

All attendees must be 21 years of age or older, with valid identification. Everyone must show their ID to be admitted; there will be no exceptions – sorry!

We reserve the right to refuse admission to anyone who appears to be intoxicated upon arrival. Please drink responsibly!

9.29.18 - CANTILLON'S ZWANZE DAY  - sold out! thank you!

We are thrilled to have been selected again to host this iconic event celebrating lambic and friendship! It is an honor and a privilege; we have now been lucky enough to host since 2014!  We are excited to announce the following awesome Cantillon beers will be available at our Zwanze Day celebration:

Rosé de Gambrinus
Grand Cru Bruocsella

zwanze 2017 blog-04.png

Tickets are extremely limited and will go on sale at 10AM on Wednesday August 29th, one month ahead of Zwanze Day.  One per person maximum, this event will sell out very quickly. Follow the link below.

If you 'd like, take a read of a piece we posted last year about why Zwanze is so important to us and so many others.

Here's a note from Jean Van Roy about this year's beer:

"At the end of 2014, determined to increase our production, we acquired a new building. In the course of the 14/15 and 15/16 brewing seasons, we had to obtain lots of new barrels to bring our dear lambic to maturity.

Hundreds of barrels, coming from various origins in France and Italy, most having contained red wine beforehand, thus came to furnish our new location. Among them, three origins stood out : those that had held Sangiovese, Amarone and Chianti. Sangiovese is a wine grape typically coming from the center of Italy, Amarone is a wine from the area of Verona that’s obtained from dried grapes, and Chianti is a region of Tuscany where the wine is made with a base of Sangiovese grapes.

At the time of the purchase of these barrels, my intention wasn’t to make a special blend, even though I must admit that seeing the results of aging Lambic in something other than a wine barrel has always been of special interest to me. The result of these experiments is often unpredictable, sometimes with a strong vinous quality, and sometimes with none at all.

During the 2015/2016 season, the Amarone barrels were filled with Lambic wort in December, and the Sangiovese and Chianti barrels were filled in January.

While tasting these beers the following year, I realized the potential that these barrels had. I decided then to age the barrels an additional year.

It was the right move. After two years of aging, each type of barrel produced a different Lambic. Different than a classic Lambic, but also different from one another. The Amarone barrels had birthed a delicate Lambic, the Sangiovese had a superb fruitiness, and the Chianti had developed a dry, tangy vinous quality.

The Sangiovese barrels aside, it wouldn’t have been very interesting to produce a beer coming solely from the the Amarone or Chianti barrels. However, the advantage of blending of these three different Lambics, each having developed its own unique qualities, quickly became apparent. So, we did the blend at the end of January 2018.

The elaboration of this beer was also for me an occasion to pay homage to our great many Italian friends who were among the first in Europe to promote and protect traditional Lambic. This year’s Zwanze is thus dedicated to them, and is a chance for me to thank them for their passion, their loyalty and their friendship!

The Zwanze 2018 is a fruity beer with notes of mango and citrus and a fine, lingering mouthfeel. Its wine-like character is not only evident, but accentuated by a slight woodiness. The Zwanze 2018 should be tasted at cellar temperature.

Cheers! JVR"

09.23.17 - Zwanze Day by Brasserie Cantillon --- SOLD OUT! Thank you!

We have the great fortune to count Jean Van Roy as a friend. Beyond being a remarkable brewer and blender, the face and and excellence behind Cantillon's iconic beers, he is a gracious person, a thoughtful and generous host, a passionate advocate for the history and quality of beer. It is because of all of these attributes we are honored and humbled to be invited - for the fourth year - to be one of a very few locations chosen across the globe to help celebrate Zwanze.

Every year the Zwanze beer is unique and different, sometimes inspired by his children - - this year is no different:

From Jean

My youngest son, Sylvain, will be 18 come October. As we did for his older brother, Florian, I wanted to celebrate this milestone by dedicating a beer to him. And what better beer than the Zwanze.
I wanted to involve Sylvain in choosing the beer, and when I asked him what blend we could make. He told me : “ I love iced tea, could we try a blend with tea?”.
After a superb tasting of several different types of tea at “Nong Cha” tea shop in the center of Brussels, we chose three teas for trial blends with Lambics. After a few days of maturation with 2 years old Lambic, we decided on a “Oolong” (Wulong), a semi-fermented blue-green tea. The Lambic-tea blend gave a great result. The beer was delicate and round, with notes of fruit and slight bitterness. Sylvain is a huge fan of “Game of the Thrones” wich inspired the graphics for the 2017 edition of our Zwanze.
But in our version, no one dies and everyone has a good beer !

The Zwanze Day will take place on Saturday 23rd of September 2017.

There are just four locations in California; our friends at Russian River (Santa Rosa), Mikkeller Bar (SF), and Beachwood (Seal Beach) are also Zwanze Day sites.

Like previous years, we have been informed that we will also have the opportunity to offer pours of

  • Gueuze

  • Cuvée St-Gilloise

  • Vigneronne

  • St-Lamvinus

  • Nath (pronounced "Nat" - a new rhubarb Lambic)

Tickets for this wonderful event will go on sale Tuesday, August 22 2017, at 10AM.

The Friendship Toast will be held at 12PM local time on Saturday September 23.  We will provide more information regarding pricing, timing, and other details in the coming weeks.  This event will sell out. Once tickets are gone, they are gone.  We hope you can join us!

10.01.16 - ZWANZE DAY 2016 - ***SOLD OUT***

We are above and beyond excited to be honored with the opportunity to host Zwanze Day again, for the third year, here at Bagby Beer Company! There are merely a handful of establishments in the world fortunate enough to be granted the distinction of hosting Zwanze Day - we are one of four in California! It is going to be a fantastic time to celebrate friendship, craft beer, and Cantillon!

For this year’s Zwanze, our wonderful friends at Brasserie Cantillon in Brussels have created an incredible beer, a traditional Framboise: using older techniques, this beer has been aged on both raspberries *and* blueberries, as at one time the cherries helped maintain the classic beautiful red color of this lovely style of beer.  They have also added a touch of vanilla, consistent with the older technique, to balance the fruit character. Cantillon has not utilized this approach for 30 years, so this beer should be something very, very special!

We will also have the opportunity to offer pours of Cantillon Gueuze, Cantillon Kriek, Mamouche, and Iris Grand Cru. Zwanze Day is October 1st, 2016. The Friendship Toast will be held at 12PM local time. Tickets will be offered for sale on Saturday, September 3rd, at 10AM. We will provide more information regarding pricing, timing, and other details in the coming weeks - this event will sell out. Once tickets are gone, they are gone.  We hope you can join us!

Remember: Tickets go on sale promptly at 10AM on Saturday September 3rd! Here's the link:

One of the oldest and most authentic makers of Lambic and Gueuze in the world, Brasserie Cantillon, in Brussels, Belgium has once again released a very special beer for this year's Zwanze Day. The Bagby's have a great relationship with Jean Van Roy and the people of Cantillon. We are really proud to pour our friend's beer for our guests here at Bagby Beer.

For 2015 Zwanze, Cantillon is releasing a "Brussels Wild Stout".

On top of the Zwanze beer, we are also excited to have received Rosé de Gambrinus, Classic Gueuze, Kriek (all on draught) and Bruoscella (in bottles).

Like last year, we'll be hosting this event in our upstairs dining room and outdoor patio.

We'll hold the  Zwanze Day toast promptly at 12pm PST so we can be in sync with the world wide toast.  As is tradition, the toast will be to celebrate Cantillon, craft beer, and friendship alongside the 54 other locations enjoying the Zwanze on September 19th! We hope you'll join us for some rare and delicious beer!

Please join us for a one-of-a-kind dinner prepared by our Chef, Brad Davis, and featuring produce from Schaner Family Farms in Valley Center. Farmer and friend of Bagby Beer, Peter Schaner, will be in attendance to tell us more about his farm and how Bagby Beer and Schaner Farms work together.

We will be celebrating the outstanding summer crop from Schaner. Look forward to learn and enjoy how beer, wine, and spirits pair with this specialty seasonal menu!

Each course will be paired with Bagby Beers, hand-made summer-inspired cocktails, and delicious wines. There will be plenty of food and tasty beverages for all in our upstairs dining room, perfectly staged for this terrific event.
